5 Signs Your Website Is Costing You Customers
Tips · Web design
You don’t need a fancy analytics dashboard to know when your website is quietly turning people away. Most owners feel it first as “the phone isn’t ringing like it used to” or “people say they couldn’t find us online.”
Here are five plain-English signs your site is costing you customers — and what to do about each one.
1. It looks fine on a laptop and broken on a phone
Most people who find you will open your site on a phone. If buttons are tiny, text runs off the edge, or the menu is a maze, they leave. You never hear about it. They just call the next business in the search results.
Fix: Open your homepage on your own phone. Try to tap Call, Book, or Contact with one thumb. If you hesitate, so will they.
2. Nobody can tell what you do in five seconds
If the top of your homepage leads with a vague slogan and a stock photo, visitors have to work to figure out whether you’re the right fit. Busy people don’t work that hard. Clear headline, clear service, clear next step — that’s the job.
Fix: Rewrite the first line so a stranger knows who you help and what you offer. Put one obvious button next to it (Call, Get a quote, Book, Shop).
3. Important pages are slow or missing
Slow pages feel broken. Missing Contact, Services, or Hours pages feel unprofessional. Either way, trust drops. Search engines notice slow and thin sites too, so you get fewer visits over time — a quiet tax on every marketing dollar you spend.
Fix: Make sure Contact, Services, and About are easy to reach from every page. Compress oversized images. Drop plugins and pop-ups you don’t use.
4. You can’t update anything without a developer
Prices change. Hours change. A storm cancels Saturday. If your site sits stale for months because updates are painful, customers will trust Google reviews and Facebook more than your own pages. Outdated info sends people to the wrong address or the wrong phone number — and that is literally money walking out the door.
Fix: Use a setup (like WordPress done right) where you or your team can change text, photos, and events yourselves. Or put maintenance on a simple monthly plan so updates actually happen.
5. There’s no clear path to contact you
Pretty sites that hide the phone number, bury the form, or open a chat widget that never replies lose leads. Your customer’s job is not to hunt. Your site’s job is to make “talk to a human” obvious on every page.
Fix: Put your phone number and a short contact form where thumbs naturally go — header, hero, and footer. Answer those leads fast.
A quick self-check
Pull up your site on your phone right now and ask:
- Do I know what this business does in five seconds?
- Can I call or email in two taps?
- Would I trust this company with my money?
If any answer is “not really,” your website is costing you customers — not because you’re bad at what you do, but because the front door doesn’t match the quality of the work behind it.
